Wolfe’s Woofer: The Maid

Share

“Hello, Marsha. What’s up?”
I was sitting at one of the beachside tables at the Holiday Hotel having coffee with my friend Bill when his wife called him.
“Oh, no!” he said, when he got off the phone. “We’re having problems with our maid, Lupe, again.”
“She’s been with you for years,” I said. “I never knew you had problems with her.”
“She started working for us six years ago. After five months she said she had to quit because she was pregnant and didn’t have a husband. She was going to leave San Pedro and go back to her village. Lupe’s a great worker and a really nice person so Marsha and I agreed to adopt the baby. That’s when we got Timmy—our oldest child.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Four years later she turned up pregnant again. After talking it over we decided to adopt little Gina, too. This year she got pregnant again and once again we agreed to adopt. Last week she gave birth to Billy—our baby boy.”
“I didn’t realize your adopted children were all from your maid. What’s up now?”
“I don’t know,” Bill said. “She just got out of the hospital and Marsha says she’s on her way down here to talk to me right now.”
When Lupe arrived she said, “Mr. Bill, I’m vexed with my job and I’m quitting.”
“But, Lupe,” he said. “Why in the world would you want to quit?”
She said, “Mr. Bill, I’m quitting because when I came to work for you, you didn’t tell me I’d have to work for a family with three kids.”
