Disney's 'Moana' debuts in Olelo Hawaii at star-studded premiere
KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Polynesian-themed Disney hit "Moana" made its debut (again) on Sunday – only this time, everything was in Olelo Hawaii.
The Hawaiian-language version of the popular animated film will premiered Sunday night at the Ko Olina Resort during their second-annual World Oceans Day celebration. Festivities included live entertainment and ocean education stations.
It's the first time a Disney movie has ever been re-recorded in Native Hawaiian.
The University of Hawaii's Academy for Creative Media System funded and coordinated the re-recording of "Moana," with the goal of sharing the film for educational purposes in Hawaii and beyond, according to the academy. The movie stars original cast member Aulii Cravalho as Moana and Waianae's Nicole Scherzinger, a former member of the R&B group The Pussycat Dolls, as Sina.
The cast also includes 24 Hawaiian-language speaking actors and singers from local communities.
