HAVANA, Cuba, May 25 (ACN) Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba and Minister of Economy and Planning, spoke on Wednesday at the opening session of the 22nd International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, which was chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation Anton Siluanov.
In his presentation before an audience of three thousand guests, including political leaders, high-level officials and business leaders, Cabrisas Ruiz spoke about the main challenges and perspectives of the Cuban economy, with special emphasis on the goals of the Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030.
As the main challenge and at the same time an obstacle to the nation's economic development, the Cuban vice president denounced the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States, which has lasted almost 60 years.
He also referred to the harmful effects of climate change on the archipelago, which has led to intense drought, frequent hurricanes and torrential rains and floods.
Cabrisas Ruiz highlighted the effective participation of the Government and Russian companies in priority economic projects that contribute to the long-term economic and social development of the Greater Antilles.
The head of the Cuban delegation to the International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg called for peace as an indispensable condition for achieving sustainable development objectives, on the understanding that without peace there is no opportunity for the development of peoples and the growth of their economies.
In response to a question from moderator Susan Li on the recent changes in the leadership of the Cuban state and government, Cabrisas Ruiz confirmed that there has only been one generational change, and that the new President Miguel Díaz-Canel guarantees the continuity of the Revolution, with a high commitment to the legacy of the historic leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz and Army General Raúl Castro Ruz.
Finally, the Cuban Vice President, when asked about his views on current trends in international trade, outlined Cuba's principled position against protectionism and in favor of multilateralism and free trade.
During the opening session, Cabrisas Ruiz held a friendly meeting with Anton Siluanov, recently appointed as the second figure of the Russian Government.
He also met today with the Advisor to the Russian President Anton Kobiakov and the newly appointed Minister of Transport Evgueni Ditrich.
The President of the Central African Republic, Fortín Touadera, and Nguyen Van Bin, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and head of its Economic Department, also took part in the opening of the great annual event on the promotion of trade, investment and international economic cooperation in this northern Russian city.
