Spirit Airlines will add nonstop service connecting Atlantic City International Airport to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Beginning April 13, 2018, Spirit will operate 4 flights per week between the two  vacation destinations.

“Spirit is proud of its strong history at Atlantic City International Airport, and we’re very excited to bring more ultra-low fares to the market,” said Mark Kopczak, Spirit Airlines’ vice president of network planning. “With this new service to New Orleans, we know more travelers will take advantage of New Jersey’s most convenient airport, whether it’s a spontaneous trip with friends or the ultimate family vacation.”

Spirit Airlines has been providing service from southern New Jersey for more than 27 years at Atlantic City International Airport.

Spirit currently operates 10 flights per day from AC to six cities, including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and West Palm Beach. On April 12,  Spirit will also resume its daily seasonal service to Atlanta. Spirit is currently the only commercial carrier airline flying out of the airport.

“We are excited Spirit Airlines is adding nonstop service between Atlantic City and New Orleans, a premier destination known for its culture, cuisine, jazz music, and Mardi Gras,” said Airport Director, Tim Kroll. “This year-round route is another result of the strong partnership between Spirit Airlines and the Atlantic City International Airport. Together, we are dedicated to promoting the convenience of our facility.”

Spirit now operates 19 daily flights from New Orleans to 17 destinations.

Spirit is an ultra-low-fare carrier that charges for checked luggage and bags that can’t fit under a seat. Chances of the carrier coming to Delaware are small, since it already serves Philadelphia International Airport.

The carrier has not announced expanded service from Philadelphia in recent months but has expanded its flight schedule to another popular airport for Delaware travelers, Baltimore-Washington.

In late March, Spirit will add flights from BWI to Montego Bay and Denver, boosting the total number of destinations to 13. That compares to seven from Philadelphia.

Another ultra-low-fare carrier Frontier briefly served New Castle Airport before shifting flights to Philadelphia. Frontier also serves Trenton, NJ.

While Atlantic City would draw few Delaware travelers,  the prospect of more available seats could help hold prices down for travel to New Orleans from airports in the region.
