Worthington 44, PA 42 PIPESTONE - After leading 15-14 at halftime, the Trojans went on a huge run, taking a 31-15 lead. Pipestone Area rallied back and eventually took the lead late in the second half, but the Trojans weren't done - top scorer Emma Thuringer took the game into her own hands, drilling a deep 3 to tie the game.
“‘ET’ came down the court and pulled up with a three like she was in the gym by herself - and she absolutely swished it, nothing but net,” said coach Eric Lindner.

After a Pipestone Area turnover, Nyamer Diew made an up-and-under move to put Worthington up by 2 with just 1.7 seconds left.

It turned out to be the game-winner. Pipestone threw a hail mary, but it wasn’t close, and the Trojans escaped with a huge road victory.

A defensive press, which was ineffective early in the game, is what got Pipestone back into it late in the second half. Worthington committed 17 turnovers and the Arrows capitalized - at one point Pipestone hit three 3-pointers off of turnovers in the span of 90 seconds.

“We escaped with the win but it was definitely a struggle,” Lindner said. “We need to do a better job with our ballhandlers to break pressure.”

Thuringer led Worthington with 12 points and 5 assists, while Anneke Weg crashed the boards with 15 rebounds. Diew had 9 rebounds and the game-winning field goal.

Lindner was frustrated by Worthington’s play under pressure, but said the experience was huge for his team.

“Early in the season it might be ugly because we're playing different kids, but our goal is to get them ready for the final stretch by having them in these situations,” Lindner said.

Worthington will travel to Sioux Falls this Saturday for a 1 p.m. against Vermillion.
