What: Arch Allies in concert with ZZ3 When: 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 Where: Jamestown Civic Center, 212 3rd Ave. NE Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 day of show

Arch Allies, a band that covers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Bon Jovi and Boston, will heat up the holiday season on Saturday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

With opening act ZZ3, a ZZ Top tribute band, Arch Allies will provide an evening of classic rock favorites like “More Than a Feeling” and “Open Arms.”

Kevin Todd is the lead guitarist and founder of Arch Allies. He said the band, which has been together for 10 years, is based out of the Twin Cities area of Minnesota.

“I’ve been playing since I was 7,” he said. “I have been playing for 54 years. I’ve always enjoyed good harmonies, good guitar playing, ballads and the rest.”

Todd said he started Arch Allies while he was part of a Journey cover band. He said he had seen a concert where Journey, Styx and REO Speedwagon toured together.

“That was a phenomenal concert,” he said. “I thought ‘That’s it.’”

Todd said he has gone through seven bass players, four keyboard players, eight drummers and four singers with Arch Allies. The current lineup includes Scott Kalderwood, lead singer, Scott Gunderson, keyboard and vocals, Johnny Gangl on bass and his son, Dyland Gangl, on drums. He said he, Kalderwood and Johnny Gangl have been together for four years, while Gunderson has been with the band for a couple of years and Dyland Gangl joined last year.

Todd said the band is self-contained, meaning it has its own road crew and travels with sound and lighting systems and video wall.

“We try to sound like a million dollars right out of the gates,” he said. “If we get to a place and there is something needed, we have our own (lights, sound) so we can make adjustments.”

Todd said for most of its time in existence the band has played Journey, Styx and REO Speedwagon. Recently the band added Boston and Bon Jovi. The songs from all of those bands are favorites of Arch Allies’ audience.

“Everybody sings with REO,” he said. “We have good vocalists, I have phenomenal musicians around me. You’re only as good as your weakest link, and I’m the weakest link, so that is a good thing.”
