Fipronil scandal pulls up egg prices in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 12.12.2017.Print version
Amid the ongoing European Union (EU) probe into fipronil contamination of eggs, prices for the product has jumped by nearly 70% since the middle of the summer, while some EU countries posted an almost twofold increase from the same period last year, Lithuania's business daily Verslo Zinios reporte, cites LETA/BNS.

"The increased demand for eggs and their products in Europe was in part due to the fipronil scandal, which forced some European producers to cease production or slaughter birds. Naturally, the market is suffering shortage of eggs and various masses, powders and other products. This was also fueled by the recent avian flu case in Italy, which led to slaying of as many as 2 million hens. Prices are currently stabilizing on the market," says Tomas Strumskas, CEO of egg producer Groward Group.

In Germany, eggs are currently about 88% more expensive than they were in late 2016, while the price increase in Belgium and the Netherlands is 92%. Denmark, Greece and Italy are the only countries posting a slight year-on-year decline in egg prices. Egg prices also went up in Lithuania, however, the price hike was not as huge as it was across the EU.
