Down's Mark Poland has announced his retirement from inter-county football after 13 seasons with the Mourne County.

The Longstone forward revealed the decision via his Twitter and Instagram accounts last night, writing: "Thanks to all who helped me on my journey. Wearing the red and black was an honour #overandout # andúnabú."

Mark Poland celebrates after scoring a goal in the 2010 All-Ireland quarter-final clash against Kerry.

Poland played a crucial role in Down's surprise run to the All-Ireland SFC final in 2010 when they lost out to Cork by a point and despite speculation over his retirement at the end of a disappointing 2016 campaign, Mourne fans were delighted to see him back in the black and red again this year.

While he was limited to a substitute's role in the season gone past, the 32-year-old played his part in helping Eamonn Burns's side reach their county's first Ulster SFC final since 2012, losing out to Tyrone by eight points in Clones. Defeat to Monaghan in the last 12 would mark Poland's last game in a Mourne jersey.
