Margaret Theresa “Peg” Rose of West Roxbury died at home Wednesday from breast cancer. She was 89.
She was born in Roxbury and was a 1945 graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School, serving as class president.
She graduated from The Teachers College of the City of Boston in 1949 and was senior class vice president.
She taught in Boston Public Schools for 15 years.
Mrs. Rose and her late husband, retired Boston firefighter Herbert J. “Red” Rose, were the owners of Prescott’s Fish Market in Roslindale Square for 28 years.
After retirement, she and her husband lived on Nantucket Island — where they had met — summering there and working for U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley. Mrs. Rose retired for good at age 82.
She was a 65-year parishioner of St. Theresa’s Church in West Roxbury.
She enjoyed museums and never missed an opportunity to attend a lecture at the local branch of the Boston Public Library, enjoyed classes at the YMCA and was a voracious reader of biographies.
Mrs. Rose stayed up on current events, read the newspaper daily and frequently clipped articles to send to family members on subjects she knew they would enjoy.
Mrs. Rose is survived by six sons, Stephen of Peabody, Michael of Hamden, Conn., Mark of Leland, N.C., Patrick of Walpole, Kevin of Ipswich and Timothy of West Roxbury; two daughters, Kathleen Esposito of Wilmington, N.C., and Margaret “Peggy” of West Roxbury; a brother, James Sullivan of Nantucket; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Theresa Church, West Roxbury.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
