A special deal for 12 pence burgers has sparked chaotic scenes in the Philippines as hundreds of people competed for the limited offer.

The frenzy was caught on camera showing people attempting to rush into popular burger chain Zark's Burgers, after it announced its first 80 customers would pay only eight pesos for a burger to celebrate their eighth birthday on Monday.

Scenes created by the overwhelming response to the cheap burgers - which usually cost 149 pesos (£2.26) - lead to Zark's Burgers issuing an apology on Monday.

In the video, hundreds of people can be seen crammed together as they wait for the store to open its doors.

People begin to surge forwards once the doors open, while loud screams can be heard coming from the crowd.

Hungry bargain-hunters appear to push and shove as they jostle for position to capture one of the dirt-cheap burgers.

A police officer struggles to subdue the crowd as a stream of people entering the store builds momentum.

He eventually stands inside the doorway and puts an end to the cheap burger-induced stampede.

Zark's Burgers said in a statement posted to Facebook on Monday: 'We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience experienced by patrons and other mall shoppers unintentionally brought about by this celebration that was intended to thank all of you for eight years of loyal support and patronage.

'We would also like to thank all officers, mall managers and security teams for ensuring everyone's safety.'
