UAB lands commitment from DL Fish McWilliams

Adarius "Fish" McWilliams, a defensive lineman from West Florida High School in Pensacola, Fla., announced his commitment to UAB on Friday night.

The 6-foot-1, 284-pound McWilliams was a priority high school target for UAB in this class. He visited UAB for its camp on Thursday.

But his story with UAB started shortly after UAB's spring game in early April.

"I watched the spring game on YouTube and I said that's going to be a pretty good team," McWilliams said. "I asked my head coach if he had been in contact with UAB coaches because I'd like to go there because it seems like a pretty nice team and a pretty nice city.

"After that, all of the UAB coaches started following me on Twitter and coach (Jeremy) Hawkins and coach (Brian) Williams started hitting me up on Twitter and we went from there."

McWilliams is UAB's third commitment for the class of 2018.

McWilliams, who will likely be an interior lineman, earned his offer on an unofficial visit on April 14.

He told UAB head coach Bill Clark and his staff early Friday morning that he would wait, but then decided to commit when he got home.

"I told them I'd get back to them in two weeks. When I got home, I started getting this feeling. I told my mom, dad and grandma that I was ready to commit. They gave me the go-ahead. I prayed about it, followed my heart and called coach Clark and coach (Kyle) Tatum and made it happen.

"The city was so nice and on my first visit, all the coaches made me feel like a family. Everybody shook their hand and made you feel like a family."

McWilliams earned the nickname "Fish" as a youth football player.

"You have a whole bunch of kids and my coach started naming most of the kids out there by nicknames to remember," McWilliams said. "I Had Fish. We had a Cheeseburger, Chicken Dinner, French Fry. Mine stuck all the way through elementary school and into high school."

McWilliams had offers reaching into the double digits, including Florida Atlantic, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, Samford, Kent State and Appalachian State.
