Father of 8-year-old killed in Culver City crash as teen driver flees cops, police say
A man was killed and his 8-year-old son injured in Culver City on Saturday when the driver of a stolen car ran a red light while trying to evade police and plowed into another vehicle at a major intersection.
The collision occurred after Culver City police officers tried to pull over a Ford Fusion without license plates about 11 a.m. at Washington and La Cienega boulevards, according to police.
The driver, a 17-year-old girl, went through a red light and struck a black BMW carrying the father and son, said Lt. Troy Dunlap with the Culver City Police Department. The man died at the scene, Dunlap said.
Coroner’s officials identified the man Sunday as Jorge Banda, 33, of Los Angeles.
After the crash, the driver of the stolen vehicle and three passengers jumped out and tried to run away, police said. Officers caught them, and all four were taken to hospitals for injuries sustained in the crash.
Authorities did not release the name of the 17-year-old driver because she was a juvenile. Culver City police Sgt. Jeff Zerbey said Sunday that she was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Three other people in the car were also arrested, authorities said: Shaquill McDade, a 21-year-old Palmdale resident; Dajuan Berry, a 20-year-old L.A. resident and Christian Simmons, a 20-year-old Hawthorne resident.
Berry sustained what a California Highway Patrol report described as major injuries in the crash, including a punctured lung.
The CHP is investigating the crash. The CHP report said it was not clear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
